интервью You’re on CBS’ hit series, NCIS, which is entering its 10th season. Congratulations! That’s quite an accomplishment in this day and age. How surprised are you that your role has lasted this long?
Everyone on set knows what a blessing we have in this show. It’s amazing for any show to last this long, but to remain a powerhouse in the ratings, and have such an amazing fan base is something that most of us didn’t see coming. I can’t say that I’m truly surprised, though. Everyone works so damned hard on NCIS, and I’m so happy that their efforts have paid off.
When you work with the same people for close to ten years, it’s safe to say that a certain amount of chemistry takes place that allows you grow as an actor. What have you learned from your other cast mates & others on the set?
I’ve learned plenty! When you spend a decade on the same character you have to learn how to adapt that character to each new sсript so that the viewers will get what they love (the character they’ve come to expect), and also blend in some new side of Jimmy that we haven’t seen before, so the artistic process won’t get stale for me. Watching McCallum do that has been a masterclass.
Your character, Jimmy Palmer, has become a fan favorite. What’s your most memorable episode thus far?
“About Face” was a great leap forward for the Jimmy character on this show, and it challenged him in ways we hadn’t see before (plus, he got to get the bad guy!). Also, this past year, Chris Waild wrote an episode “Newborn King” where Jimmy had a great opportunity to step up in a different way. He stood up in defense of his team, and to an extent, his own manhood. It was fun to play, and I hope for more Jimmy-centric stuff this season.
The season finale ended with an explosion that could wipe everyone out! What can you tell us about the upcoming Season 10?
Nothing. I’ve been sworn to secrecy and I don’t want to be assassinated…. But between you and me, what I can say is this: After a team as tight as the NCIS gang is, gets blown up, it’s going to take more that 43 minutes to put all the pieces back together. There may be some scar tissue that we have to deal with. And as Ducky tries to work his way back, and come back to NCIS, he will have a ton on his plate mentally and physically as well. Jimmy has to step up in a big way to help his mentor and friend.
I’ve said too much…
You look much different from Jimmy Palmer in your REGARD Magazine fashion spread as our Man of Style. Who are your some of your favorite fashion designers and styles?
When I’m on set, I generally wear the equivalent of pajamas to work, so pretty much any clothing is a step up fashion-wise (though it’s hard to beat scrubs in the comfort department!). I’m a t-shirt and jeans kind of guy. That said, I do love good jeans and good t-shirts. As far as designer apparel, I’ve started wearing suits and shirts made by Commonwealth Proper, which is based out of Philly. They make amazing tailored suits that have a classic look, and amazing fit. Can’t say enough good things about them.
We look forward to catching you on NCIS. What other projects are you working on besides the show?
A feature film I wrote, produced and starred in, will premiere at the Austin Film Festival next month. It’s called “Congratulations” and I couldn’t be more proud of it. I wrote it with a few good friends of mine, and we pulled together as many favors as possible over the course of this last year to make it happen.
Debra Jo Rupp, from “That 70’s Show” plays my mom in it, Kevin Rankin from “Justified” and “Friday Night Lights” plays my best friend, and “Justified’s” Abby Miller, who I wrote the sсript with plays my love interest. It’s an awesome relationship film that breaks down perceptions of marriage for my generation, and as I said before, I’m very proud of it. The character is a far cry from Jimmy Palmer, but I am always thankful that having Jimmy Palmer and NCIS in my life, as it’s enabled me to work on passion projects like this one!
