Exclusive Full Interview: NCIS’ Mark Harmon On Season 9 Finale and More

As promised, here is the full of interview that we conducted with Mr Mark Harmon about the season 9 finale episode, the series in general and his still surprising connection with his character.

It must be gratifying to get a new season.

Mark Harmon: Well, in this one, we knew early that we were picked up and it helps being the number one show. People can break for the hiatus knowing that they have a job to come back to in July. That’s hugely important. For the last number of years we’ve been in that decision process. So, yeah, it’s nice to know that and it’s nice to know that you’re a part of something successful and it’s nice to know that you’re coming back to work with the same people that you left a month ago.

It feels like over the years the cast continues to bond. Do you see it the same way?

Mark Harmon: I think it’s really like any job and any workspace. It doesn’t happen all the time that you love the people that you’re working with. There’s four of them that have been there from the beginning and then we’ve had changes, in front of the camera at least. We’ve had changes behind the camera, too, that are just as important, but in all cases I think we’ve gotten better and that’s not taking away anything from the people that left.

It just means that the balance that this show has achieved both behind the camera and in front of the camera is rare and because it’s rare it’s appreciated. There are a lot of people on this show, both in front and behind that have done projects not as successful as this and not as pleasurable as this, and therefore they appreciate this one so much more.

You had some great guest stars this season, including Jamie Lee Curtis. How was it having her on set this season?

Mark Harmon: She’s terrific. I’ve known Jamie a long time. She’s a treat to have on set. The rest of the cast loves her and Gary Glasberg has created a role for her that made her want to come and play in the first place, which is rare. But she’s had a great time there and I think she’d tell you that as well. She’s a gift to have on the set and such a rare talent, and as a person, a good person and terrifically good at what she does. So, we’ve enjoyed having her.

Do you feel that Gibbs has had more to play with this season since her character has been an interesting counterpoint to his?

Mark Harmon: Gibbs is an odd guy in any kind of relationship, but her background and what she does professionally, even before they met, kind of put the two of them in to conflict. I think conflict in characters is a good thing and certainly interesting to write and certainly fun to play.

Whether they will end up together or whether this will just be something in passing and part of the ensemble nature of this show, which we’ve done a lot, it brings the character forward. It brings her character forward as well, and then obviously, every other character that comes into this arc, but it’s fun to have.

It’s been fun to play, and I think that Gary has done a really nice job creating that. It’s just one of the added beats that continues to define what the show has been over the years.

What can you tease about the upcoming season finale?

Mark Harmon: I think Gary has worked hard. It’s been like a four show season arc towards the end of the season. It ends tomorrow night. But he’s worked hard to try to create a threat or an arc that is really America based, that really puts the team in the center of trying to solve this and trying to disarm this threat and bring it back towards the Navy and toward the Marine Corps.

In years past we’ve done some of these kinds of arcs, but most of them have been out of the country. This happens here. I think he’s done a nice job with that. That’s what he set out to do at the beginning of the year and he’s kind of brought it here to conclusion tomorrow night. I don’t know that it’ll totally end tomorrow night. I wouldn’t be surprised if this fell into next year as well, but this is an exciting end.

Like many things on this show, maybe it’s not an end, but it’s been a good arc and the audience seems to be agreeing with that.

Every season we learn a little more about Gibbs. Do you ever learn something about Gibbs at this point that you didn’t know before?

Mark Harmon: All the time, and I think that everyone would say the same thing. I’ve never been one to go up to the writers office and sit down and say, ‘What are we doing?’ I much prefer getting a sсript and reading about what they had in mind. A lot of time we play certain beats blind because you don’t know where they’re going, but that’s also part of the joy of this show.

I don’t believe two hundred and ten episodes in, going into your number one show, no one is bored. It’s still fun to play those roles. It’s still fun to play opposite these people that I get to work with everyday. As long as that maintains, I think that all of us feel the same way. I don’t think that anybody feels like they’re interested in running something into the ground. They would much rather this end on the high side and they all end at some point. Right now there’s nothing but future ahead of us and I think that everyone feels that.

Gibbs is famous for having a specific set of rules. There are websites that have been cataloguing all his rules. What’s your favorite rule?

Mark Harmon: I don’t know. I know there’s supposed to be fifty one rules so far, fifty something rules, right?

The count is at sixty nine, but it’s all over the place.

Mark Harmon: Oh, sixty nine, that’s right. I remember that. I know that there aren’t a complete set. I know there are holes in that and I know that they track those carefully and I know the ones that they let out are careful. I don’t know that I have a favorite personally. I actually find Gibbs rules interesting and his moral structure or compass, the way that he leads himself and where they come from.

I think they’ve established that the rule thing came from his wife, Shannon, and yet, you know what, maybe rules aren’t a bad thing for people. Certainly some of the ones that he’s spouted over the years here, they make you think a little bit. They’re pretty simple in their genesis, but they’re complex in the way that they’re delivered.

If you had the opportunity to talk to yourself before you started this series what advice would you give yourself?

Mark Harmon: I had plenty of opportunity to talk to myself. As an actor you read scripts and you respond the minute you close the last page, what you think. At the time I was directing and I was doing some features and I was doing some guest stuff and I was not thinking in terms of looking to do a series. I was just looking to play a role like we all are when we read a sсript, but I was pleasantly surprised in reading this sсript that I liked the character.

I liked the fact that there was humor. There was a case, yeah, but the case wasn’t what drove it. There were all these characters. So, it interested me at the time to find out who these other characters were going to be, and at the time David McCallum was already cast. Pauley Perette was already cast. When I had my first meeting, they were talking about a young actor named Michael Weatherly. So, that foursome was there almost from day one and that’s the foursome that still remains.

So, what I would’ve said to myself at the time, you know what, actors take a shot. People have said: “did you think back nine years ago that this was going to go two hundred and ten episodes”. I think every actor thinks that. You have to think that the thing you’re doing is a good choice. But I’ve been a part of many shows that haven’t been this successful and certainly played characters that haven’t been Leroy Gibbs.

So, do I appreciate this and what this has become and the way that the audience has stayed with this and the camaraderie that we’ve carved out over the years on this show? People don’t leave this show. This group has worked together for a lot of years and that’s a huge advantage.

If you could guest star on any other TV show, which one would it be?

Mark Harmon: I’d be on the one that I’m on. I would. I’d be on the one that I’m on. That’s important because we have some writers on our show that have written over forty episodes. That doesn’t happen in an hour of dramatic television. This is pleasant to work on, and people who have come on the set, the guests or whatever, they want to stay. There isn’t a cast member on this show that doesn’t know that it’s important to try to make a guest star miss this show when they leave.

I’ve been on other sets and I’ve been on sets that are close to this and you learn a few things and you go, ‘Wow, it really can happen.’ And I’ve been on some miserable sets, too, like you’ve had jobs probably that are the same way. All in all I’m nothing but appreciative for this opportunity and the people that work on this show and my support of them. So, I’m very happy with where I am, and I’ll tell you that it’s taken a long time to carve this out here. This show has fought for what it’s enjoying right now and I don’t think that anybody is confused about what it took to get here or what it’ll take to stay.

Well, we promised a cliffhanger…didn’t we?

I know some of you are in shock. Take a deep breath. Enjoy the rollercoaster ride. It was meant to thrill, and I hope we delivered. Even nine years into a series, we keep coming up with new twists and turns. Expect the unexpected. Things won’t be slowing down anytime soon. We are all having too much fun and, hopefully, you are too.

Before I get into any specifics related to the finale, let’s talk about Season Nine. What an amazing experience this year has been. Terrific stories from the best writing staff I could ever ask for. Hands down, this is the most talented cast I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Mark, Michael, Cote, Sean, Pauley, David, Rocky and Brian are, simply put, inspiring. And, don’t forget the greatest crew in television. 210 episodes into the series and NCIS is showing no signs of slowing down.

Season Nine was chock full of surprises. From meeting Abby’s brother (you’ll be seeing him again soon) to experiencing the raw emotion of our 200th episode, we pushed the envelope…we tested the boundaries…we learned more about these wonderful characters and, trust me, there is A LOT more to come.

We know how important the NCIS family is to you. Yes, we literally just shook the foundation of NCIS. But Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs would be the first to say, “Nobody touches my family.” Harper Dearing is still out there. Can you imagine what’s in store for him come September? I can…and I’m loving it.

Tony Wharmby directed this episode masterfully. Greg Gontz edited it like a surgeon. As guest stars, Scott Wolf, Jamie Lee Curtis and Richard Schiff brought nuance to the sсript in ways I never imagined. People are bringing their “A” game to the ninth season of a television show. How extraordinary is that?

Will we be biting our nails all summer in anticipation? I’m afraid so. But revel in it. Laugh at it. Have fun with the possibilities. Get excited about the year that lies ahead.

It’s time for all of us to take a few days off and enjoy our families. We wish you all a terrific summer filled with gorgeous sunsets, delicious barbeques, and long poolside naps.

Ducky’s last words before the heart attack were, “ It’s imperative that no one touch any of the deceased…”

See you in the fall when, I promise, you’ll get all the answers you’re looking for.

I’d say it’s a safe bet, but as EP Gary Glasberg told me, it doesn’t mean Ducky won’t face a whole other set of challenges in the season closer and beyond. “The fact that [McCallum] is committed to continuing on the show is wonderful for us, but it’s not going to keep us from trying things and surprising people. That’s true of any of the characters on the show,” he says. “We’re always interested in keeping things challenging and entertaining for them as actors, and we’re going to continue to push the envelope for them so they can continue to do some phenomenal work.”

NCIS Boss: Season Finale Packs a Surprising Return and a 'Cliffhanger for Everyone'

Will the Season 9 finale of CBS’ NCIS (airing Tuesday at 8/7c) feature a wedding and a funeral? Or one or the other, or neither?

With the hunt for the newest member of the NCIS Most Wanted Wall, CEO-turned-terrorist Harper Dearing, rolling to a boil, TVLine spoke with showrunner Gary Glasberg about what to expect.

TVLINE | I wanted to start off by saying I think it’s interesting what you’re doing with Richard Schiff (The West Wing) as the villain. He’s not some ex-Mossad extremist, he’s not some homegrown militia nutjob….
Thank you. The intention with the Harper Dearing character was to always go with sort of the opposite of what you would expect, someone more intellectual and mild-mannered, and yet have this really interesting complex backstory of what’s driving him. Having Richard do it was a real treat for us because he brings such complexity and nuance to his work. The subtlety and the twists and turns of who we wanted Harper Derring to be is something Richard handles beautifully.

TVLINE | Are his motivations for sabotaging the Navy compelling? Is this about financial gain, a misguided cause…? A bit of both?
That’s all revealed as the final episodes unfold. But there is a deep-seeded emotional and psychological drive to why he feels he has to do this.

TVLINE | Gibbs seemed to have a real fire in his belly about this case. Would you say that it is affecting him in some unique way, different than others have?
It definitely connects, and anytime that we’re talking about an aggressor attacking the Navy and innocent military personnel, he is going to respond in an aggressive way back. And as the storyline unfolds, people will learn a little more about Gibbs’ position on this.

TVLINE | What can you say about how Scott Wolf, returning as Jonathan Cole, fits into the finale?
Scott has had this really fun arc for us throughout the season — I know he has been pleased with it — and I think everyone is going to be really surprised by how he fits into this. His involvement is really going to run the gamut.

TVLINE | How would you describe the finale’s action quotient? Some fans feel that the NCIS mothership has been a little “quiet” as of late.
I think that people are going to be shocked at what they get at the end of this season. I personally don’t mind mixing it up and pulling back periodically and mixing in “quieter” episodes, as you said, and then opposing those with moments that really push everyone’s buttons and are more explosive.

TVLINE | Will the finale leave any of the team members injured, or perhaps even close to death?
We’re definitely giving everyone a true cliffhanger at the end of the season, and absolutely putting people in dangerous situations that will leave everyone wondering what has happened.

TVLINE | With all you have going on in the finale, will there be time for Jimmy Palmer’s wedding?
There are elements of the wedding that people will get to see. You will get to see Jimmy and Breena, and there is lots of discussion and some really sweet wonderful moments that happen. Larry Miller will not be returning (as Breena’s father); I know he has been ill and we certainly wish him all the best. But there are some great little moments you will be getting.

TVLINE | Speaking of little moments, you know I must ask: Anything “Tiva” fans can look forward to?
There a couple of exchanges in the finale. But I think the characters are so focused on the case and what’s going on, it’s more about that and it’s less about any specific relationship moment between [Tony and Ziva].

TVLINE | And where will things stand with Jethro and Dr. Ryan (played by Jamie Lee Curtis) at the end of the season?
That sort of reaches a climax in the finale, and they have some really wonderful scenes together. I’m going to leave you with a big question mark and let people see how she sort of fits in to the Harper Dearing Story, and how that affects their relationship.

TVLINE | Are you feeling good about having everybody back for next season? [Michael Weatherly, Pauley Perrette and Sean Murray have yet to ink deals for Season 10.]
The studio handles the contractual aspects of it, while I and the writers handle the creative side of things. But I have no doubt that it will all work out.

Today, I had the great privilege to talk to none other than Mr Mark Harmon aka Leroy Jethro Gibbs, the leader of the team behind the CBS’ ratings juggernaut NCIS which ends its ninth season tomorrow Tuesday, May 15 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
During our very interesting chat, Mr Harmon went over a slew of topics including the upcoming season finale, the introduction of Samantha Ryan played by Jamie Lee Curtis and even what was his favorite Gibbs’ rule. The full interview will be up before tomorrow’s premiere but in the meantime, I wanted to share a few tidbits of what we talked about:

- Harmon credits the great story arc of the season to writer Gary Glasberg

- Says Gary wanted the story to focus on America based threat, instead of a foreign one and of course focus it on the navy so that NCIS is at the center of the solution

- Season arc ends tomorrow night but he wouldn’t be surprised “if this fell unto next year as well”

- Harmon about the season finale: “This is an exciting end and like many things on this show, maybe it’s not an end.”

- Harmon on Gibbs and Ryan Relationship: “Gibbs is an odd guy in any kind of relationship” but in this case, her background put two of them in conflict

- Says that whether they will end up together or not, it brought Gibbs’ character forward.

- Also says Jamie Lee Curtis is a treat to have on set. She had a great time, a good person and a rare talent.

- Harmon still gets surprised about his character

- He got a kick out of knowing that there are fan sites that catalogue all the Gibbs rules.

- He doesn’t necessarily have a favorite rule but he likes that Gibbs has them because it gives him a moral structure.

ADAM: I don't want to burst your bubble... so I'll let executive producer Gary Glasberg do it instead. "This finale is really about them being focused as a team," he says. "Yes, there are emotional elements, as we always do, but I would say their primary focus is on the work." But don't give up! "[Tony's] evolving and learning more about himself and what he wants from his life, and I think Ziva is the same way," Glasberg says. "Those experiences will continue into Season 10." ‘NCIS’ Executive Producer Promises a ‘Genuine Cliffhanger’ of a Finale

The ninth season of “NCIS” was celebrated with a special 200th episode that revisited major events in the life and career of Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ (Mark Harmon) but with a twist — we had the opportunity to see what would have happened if he had made different choices.

“It was our looking back as a show — the writers, the producers, the actors — looking back and wanting to touch on specific moments as much as it was reaching out to the fans and giving them something fun to watch,” Executive Producer Gary Glasberg told XfinityTV.com when the episode aired.

For diehard fans, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the show to resurrect the dead — and for some to give them different outcomes, including Kate (Sasha Alexander) and the man who murdered her Ari (Rudolf Martin), Gibbs’ mentor Mike Franks (Muse Watson), as well as Gibbs’ late wife Shannon (Darby Stanchfield) and, for the first time, we met Gibbs’ mother (Clare Carey), who turned out to be a redhead, like his ex-wives.

But season nine offered way more than that. In addition to all the twisty, turn-y, wonderful cases, we really got to see the personal side of our special agents. Gibbs began dating Dr. Samantha Ryan (Jamie Lee Curtis), Ducky (David McCallum) fell in love with a woman who turned out to be psycho (Cheryl Ladd), we met Tony’s (Michael Weatherly) ex-fiancée Wendy (Perrey Reeves), Ziva (Cote de Pablo) broke up with Ray (Enrique Murciano), and Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) got engaged.
So, before the “NCIS” season finale airs Tuesday, May 15, we checked back with Glasberg to get his highlights and lowlights — if any — of the ninth season of TV’s No. 1 drama.

Take us inside your approach to the finale, and what you wanted to accomplish.
This finale is a genuine cliffhanger. In going into the storyline, the arc that we set up for the end of the season, we wanted to tell a story of a terrorist act against the Navy. We wanted to set up a genuinely frightening threat against our military personnel and really leave people wondering how we are going to pick up at the beginning of season 10. I think and hope that we have accomplished that.

Aren’t you throwing in a wedding also?
Yes. It is a fascinating juxtaposition of storylines. The Palmer wedding absolutely comes into play and definitely leaves people in an awkward situation.

Did anything disappoint you about this season? Anything you wish you could have done, but didn’t have the time, forethought or resources?
I am tremendously pleased with what we accomplished this season. We tried some different things. For season nine of a television series, our ratings have been fantastic. We had some wonderful guests. We did some really wonderful military stories. I feel like we really touched on a lot of different arenas and different elements of the characters and I am very pleased with it.

What should fans look forward to next season? And if you haven’t gotten that far yet…what would your dream season be?
We are starting to put together our stories. I want to focus more on the Navy and the military stories for us and dig even deeper into who are characters are and how they interact with each other and as a team. I know that it is really important to the fans that they see this team working together. That is important to us, as well, and I want to make sure that we do that for them.

Maybe a little bit more romance?
As we get deeper into where our characters are and what they want in their personal lives, it is always possible.

What were the high points of the season?
For me, episode 200 was very special. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Working with our cast has just been phenomenal. They really brought their A-game to season nine. I think we have done some really strong episodes. We had some really strong guest stars who were enthusiastic and interested and wanted to come and play with us — from Jamie Lee Curtis to Robert Wagner to Richard Schiff. It has been great. I just want to keep it going as long as we can.

Do you have a favorite episode, line, or scene from this season? If so, what?
I honestly don’t. I am so involved in all of them. I just feel that we really did some terrific work. I can’t single out one more than the others.
