NCIS Exclusive: Friday Night Lights Alum Gaius Charles Scores Scorching Role as Tony's [Spoiler]

Gaius Charles has landed a (literally) hot new gig on CBS’ NCIS, TVLine has learned exclusively.

The Friday Night Lights MVP has been cast in the potentially recurring role of Jason, a charming, likable and keenly intelligent Baltimore native whom Tony (Michael Weatherly) saved from a fire years ago. Now an arson investigator and still haunted by the death of a family member years ago, Jason is driven — perhaps too far — to do his best work and try to save as many lives as he can.

This “kid from Baltimore” was most recently and vaguely alluded to in the Season 9 premiere, spurring much speculation among the top drama’s many fans about his ties to Tony.

“Many of the people involved with NCIS were big Friday Night Lights fans, so having Gaius join us is a genuine pleasure,” exec producer Gary Glasberg tells TVLine. “We are thrilled to have on board and look forward to everything he brings to the role.”

Charles, who experienced a bit of a career lull following FNL while he pursued a graduate degree in theology, recently guest-starred as a love interest for Margot Robbie’s Laura on ABC’s Pan Am.

Look for him to be reunited with Tony when a string of fires leave the Baltimore cops stumped and in need of some federal input.

We’ve been building up to the NCIS wedding all season, and it’s almost here! But Jimmy Palmer’s much-awaited nuptials, which take place during the season finale, won’t be set in D.C. Nope, the team’s going on the road for the big event and headed to…

“Breena’s character is from Florida, so the plan is to have this wedding in Florida,” executive producer Gary Glasberg reveals to EW exclusively. “The whole team will, in theory, all head down for that and at the same, time be dealing with some significant stuff back in D.C. It’ll be a juggling act between the two.”

Still in the process of being written, the finale will pit the team against a “unique” adversary that will challenge the team in a way we haven’t seen before, he adds.”This one will be a little different because it’s going to be more focused on the Navy and more about the fleet. Someone’s targeting Navy ships,” he says. “I like to pull things back periodically. I don’t want to forget that NCIS is a Navy-related show. I know that that’s important to our military overseas and a lot of our viewers. I think they’ll enjoy this sort of twist in the storyline.”

But will this twist include a body count? Glasberg’s understandably coy, but says, “There’s some danger involved and we’ll have to see where that puts our team. There’ll be a cliffhanger and we’ll see what’s left when we come back.”

Asking if there will be a cliff-hanger on an NCIS finale is like asking if the episode will have a crime. Of course there’s a mighty cliff’er and plenty of danger involved, too. And if I had to put my money on the person most likely to be in a compromising situation, I’d have to go with Ducky, especially after what executive producer Gary Glasberg told me. “Ducky’s going to have his hands full. We’ve got a situation where there will be injured and bodies and he’ll have a lot on his plate. That combined with Palmer’s wedding — there’s a lot going on. Ducky is an integral part of this team and we’ve figured out a fun story line for him. I’m excited to see how David McCallum embraces it and how the whole team participates in it,” he says, reminding me with a laugh, “I view suspense and edge-of-your-seat as fun.”

'NCIS': Pauley Perrette makes friends, feels empowered, on Twitter

Fans of CBS' Tuesday-night hit "NCIS" know Pauley Perrette as Abby Sciuto, the sweet-natured scientist with the Goth fashion style who runs the crime lab for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service team led by Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon, on right with Perrette below).

But Twitter users also know her as @PauleyP, an enthusiastic and upbeat presence with almost 140,000 followers. Recently, CBS sponsored a panel discussion on how its stars use Twitter, and Perrette shared some of her tweeting philosophy and experience.

How she got onto Twitter: "I started off, I have a YouTube channel, and I kept getting impersonated. I wasn't on Facebook; I wasn't on Twitter; I wasn't on anything. It's so funny, because the name of my band is Stop Making Friends. It's like a joke about the social network. I even had a whole entire YouTube video that had been seen thousands of times of me going, 'I am not on Twitter; I am not on Facebook,' because I kept getting impersonated all the time.

"Then, random, this seems like a non sequitur, but this women's and children's shelter that is very close to my heart in Sylmar was closing. We take people off downtown streets of L.A. and put them in this beautiful place. We have got about 100 women and 75 kids and about 90 elderly people there, and it was closing. I was freaking out. I talked to my pastor, I'm like, 'What do we do? What do we do?'

"And then my friend from church is like, 'You should start a Twitter account.' 'No, no, no, Stop Making Friends, that's not me, that's not me.' ... But we started Twitter, and through that, and then a couple other things that happened, we raised $2.5 million in 48 hours, saved the shelter.

"With that much more money, we moved a bunch more people into the shelter. Instead of the shelter closing, we were able to afford that."

On the way she feels about Twitter now: "I became a Tweetaholic, and I hold nothing back. I tweet for 'NCIS,' because I love my show. It's my favorite show in the world. I'm a total fan addict.

"I started this thing, like I do thematic tweeting wherever I go. Because my people are all around the world, I had everybody in every country in the world do the 'I love you' sign, from every country in the world, which was insane. It was crazy how it all came back.

"So, I went from being like, 'I'm never going to do this,' to 'OK, I'll do it for the shelter,' to literally I'm just, like, never not doing this" -- she mimes thumb-typing -- "all the time."

On turning the tables on her fans: "I rescue dogs. So, I'm like, 'Send me a picture of your dog.' Hundreds of thousands. I love any puppy or kitten. I am a softie -- but then I like to look around their houses, too. You look at what they are doing.

"But what has kind of turned the tables on that, is that we were are in their house every night. They are looking at us in their living rooms, so I get to see their living room, which is fun."

On feeling empowered through social media: "When you're in the public eye, and you're a celebrity, it is really, really dehumanizing, and it is also really frightening, because you have no control over anything.

"Social networking has given us the power back; it really has. I will be, like, 'Hey, those naked pictures of me on eBay are totally fake. I have never taken one.' Now I just say it. I just say it to everybody. Now. 'They are fakes. Yeah, they are fakes.' That just happened to me.

"And then whatever anything that you read, or somebody else writes, whatever, I immediately can put the correct information out there by myself. I don't have to call anybody. I don't have to do anything. That, as a celebrity, was really empowering to me, to be able to combat lies about yourself."

On getting co-star Michael Weatherly on Twitter, even though he isn't on Twitter: "I NCIS-Michael-Weatherly.jpghave a hashtag called #MichaelWeatherlyQuotes , so he doesn't have to be on Twitter. He's so funny. Everything that comes out of his mouth is so funny. So I do Michael Weatherly quotes, and then I just repeat everything he says all the time.

"But one of the Michael Weatherly quotes was, 'I think Twitter takes a very specific personality. So, we're just going to let Pauley do it for everybody.'"

On why she won't respond to fans on Twitter: "This sounds insane, but it's my life -- I have a stalker problem, like, actually, a big stalker problem, like five restraining orders against one nut.

"So, I'm with the LAPD Stalking Squad. I'm one of their greatest clients. So when I was like that, my detective, Martha, said, 'Absolutely not. You are not getting into that. That is not safe.' I do whatever they tell you. So, we set up rules, there, too, and one of mine is I don't re-tweet, and I don't respond.

"After a while, there are more people, like -- you know the ones, 20 times normal -- 'I love you. I'm going to keep writing. Respond, respond.'

"I'm very honest with my fans all the time. I say, 'Look, I have stalkers. I have a big security problem, and per the orders of the LAPD, I cannot re-tweet you, and I cannot respond directly to anything you're saying.'

"So I don't respond directly. Say a subject is brought up that interests me, or especially some tragedy, like with Norway or something -- which I find out about (on Twitter) before it is on the news, of course, I will start Tweeting about that. But not directly to a certain person.

"I will take what they are talking about and then talk about it myself. Plus, I tell fans all the time -- '10 billion of you guys are awesome, but there is one nut job out there that is going to ruin it for everybody; always is.'"

ON THE SET AT ‘NCIS’: A PREVIEW

You may have seen my Tweets about roaming on the NCIS set, and indeed, I’ve come back from my travels with a nugget of scoop for you! (There’s a lot more where this came from, so stay tuned!) But until then, executive producer Gary Glasberg opened up to me about the episode they were filming on the day I was on set, which will introduce us to a longtime friend of Ziva’s, played by Karina Lombard (Rescue Me, The L Word), who becomes involved in a case being worked on by the team.

“We established in the season opener that she has this friend who she was going to talk to and see,” says Glasberg. “In this episode, we’re actually going to meet this woman, who is a friend of Ziva’s who shares a bit of big sister relationship with her.”

The episode ends up taking the gang to Colombia (erm, Long Beach), where they go to investigate the case of a missing Navy chaplain. “She participates with us and helps us figure it out. Along the way, you get an understanding of the relationship [between Ziva and her friend],” he said. All this, he adds, is just a piece of the character-centric puzzle they’re putting together that will come into play heavily in the season finale. “[Ziva] is realizing that she’s made decisions along the way. She has to decide how important a relationship is to her and what she really wants from her life too,” he says. “It’s nice to be nine and a half seasons into a show and feel like the characters are still figuring out who they are. I feel like there’s a long way to go. It is realistic.”

Hollywood’s art directors are getting the credit they deserve at PaleyFest, the Paley Center for Media’s annual tribute to the art of television. A well timed outdoor production for a new episode of the CBS series “NCIS” provided an ideal opportunity to demonstrate how talented television art directors put art to work. “Navy Crime Scene Investigation”Production Designer Robert Bacon works full time creating art to be used on the set, but the entire crew gets involved in integrating the art into a polished production.

The end result of this team effort is authenticity. Linden Avenue in Long Beach was magically transformed into a Mexican village. In minutes, the Broadlind Café became the Rincon Café at the Hotel Hermosa. Tropical flowers (made of silk) gave the site an authentic look and feel. Folkloric arts of Mexico were painstakingly displayed on a traditional carriage and surrounding banners. Every object from tableware at the café table to Mexican license plates on motorcycles is carefully co-ordinated so that viewers become totally engaged in the scene.

NCIS | Whether vows are actually exchanged this season remains to be seen, but Jimmy Palmer is heading for a wedding, and according to Brian Dietzen that means “a big question” needs to be answered. “Is Katherine Heigl planning it, or J.Lo?” Michael Weatherly interrupts. “Or, is Breena pregnant?!” (Wrong on both counts, buddy.) No, the matter at hand is choosing a best man, says Dietzen. “Do I try and get my mentor, in Ducky? Do I go for the class clown/cool kid in Tony? Do I go with the guy I have most in common with, McGee? Because we’re both, let’s be honest, somewhat nerdy. Or do I go with my dream pick, Gibbs? I mean, who doesn’t want that guy by his side?” Watch for Jimmy to make his choice in an April episode. Now as for the bachelor party, I ran by Dietzen Weatherly’s possi-spoiler that Abby and Ziva will be in charge of the fete. “If that’s the case, it’d probably be a bit more crazy!” he reckoned. “I think Tony would go straight down the middle with a frat boy type of party.”
